Elaine, Cherry Chase mom

I first met Elaine last May. Judy had introduced us as moms who had boys starting kindergarten at Cherry Chase in the fall. Elaine enthusiastically invited us over. Enthusiastic is a word that comes to mind when I think of Elaine. Enthusiastic and exuberant, vibrant, funny, considerate, talented, and smart.

We had playdates, we talked about our worries and thoughts about having our oldest child going to kindergarten. The day before school started we found out our kids were in the same class. Amazing! With seven kindergarten classes, what were the chances of that? We were excited.

A story: Even though Elaine was going through cancer treatment, she readily volunteered in the classroom every chance she got. She was there at the Halloween party, and the teacher asked her to read a book to the class. When Elaine finished reading, Justin leapt to his feet to give her a standing ovation, and said "Everyone clap for my mom!!" I thought it was very sweet.

I admired her energy and strength. I admired her talent - in gardening, in cooking, in music. I admired the way she approached things, jumping in with two feet and with her whole heart. I admired how she volunteered so much and was so considerate.

I am grateful to God for the privilege of meeting and spending time with Elaine. The example of how she lived her life inspires me to want to be a better friend and a more enthusiastic volunteer, to be able to jump in with two feet and my whole heart.
